The list of songs where the original recording was so good that you just shouldn't cover it, at all, is pretty short in my view "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire is a slam-dunk entry though

(I mean, obviously it is pretty much the exact same lyrics except for the gender flip and a few rephrased lines That said, it's also obviously an infinitely better song from the POV of one of the titular "girls", as well as Lauper being an infinitely better performer)

ahahahaha oh shit, I had no idea she did that, that's hilarious, and also she's one of the few musicians that I think can get away with it

Maybe not lyrics, but I'd argue the song went through a lot of adaptation to go from Hazard's to Lauper's. But I can understand not receiving proper credit is grating. I've been watching a lot of Miniature unboxings and am still floored Games Workshop denies their artists credit

most toy companies don't credit their artists (shout out to
@BossFightStudio for crediting everyone on their packaging), hell I've never received a screen credit for any film or tv show I worked on, it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks but it's par for the course unfortunately
