I normally really enjoy looking up a song on Spotify and then finding the huge list of covers by various artists and listening to all of them too The covers/remixes of September, however, all deeply offend me

I mean honestly the one with Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick from the Troll movie is the best one, because they're just doing karaoke of the original while sticking as close to it as possible Every single one of the sad slow acoustic guitar covers can eat my dick though

If Aretha Franklin covered your song, it was Aretha Franklin's song from that point forward. To wit, when you do a search for a song by Otis Redding:pic.twitter.com/OT1M0gO85r

I wouldn't call myself a "maximalist" when it comes to music generally but I usually respect covers that add more stuff onto the original much more than covers that "strip away", which includes Franklin's famous cover of Redding If only because it requires more work

You know I actually used to be a really big fan of Pomplamoose, weird as it is to think back on Their quirky-twee thing is actually pretty different from the sad, earnest campfire covers I was just ragging on

I hope that “Fast Car” is on that list because it should be a national monument that cannot be altered in any way

Agreed that a song is more likely to make this list if it has a complicated but satisfying arrangement. “Sowing the Seeds of Love” comes to mind. Then again, if a cover out-arranges the original is it usually worth hearing. “I Feel For You” is a good example of this.

Aretha is the best singer of all time imo and she absolutely owned Respect, but there are dozens of her covers in which the original still stands as clearly superior. Which is fine, because she covered hundreds of songs, but still.
