Arthur Chu Retweeted For Exposure

Arthur Chu added,
Didn't Van Gogh only become a big deal after his death? IIRC he only ever sold one painting in his life and that was to his brother who lied about selling it to make Vincent feel better.
Van Gogh fucking killed himself because his life was an endless parade of rejection and failure aggravating his existing mental illness into an unceasing living hell
Yeah, Van Gogh would be the very person that many of these hungry for the good ol days advocates would despise. Much like how Van Gogh's impressionism was discounted during his life.
If Vincent Van Gogh were alive today he'd have a Patreon worth like $400 every month, most from his brother and his brother's friends And he'd have a bunch of harassers from the Parisian art scene calling him an e-beggar fundraising off his bipolar diagnosis
Van Gogh literally did so much free painting "for exposure" and it never got him jack shit He had an ambiguous love affair with Agostina Segatori and gave her a bunch of paintings to put in her café to promote himself and she just kept them after they cut ties
He would try to pay his debts with paintings, which was just another thing people treated as one of his obnoxious eccentricities He gave a painting to his landlord that his landlord used to repair a hole in a chicken coop before giving it away
(Said "lost painting" was tracked down with great effort in the 20th century and is now worth millions of dollars)
