It's not just that. She's a white female writer who has white female privilege to an extreme. Take a look at the stats and see how grossly skewed publishing corps are in the direction of publishing white women. The graphs of this disparity could be replaced with fascist data.

These graphs indicate that white supremacy is ACTIVE both for white men AND for (heteronorm) white women. Some of them brag about how little time they spent writing their alleged novels.https://blog.leeandlow.com/2020/01/28/2019diversitybaselinesurvey/ …

Luck, and good connections. And a large part of her luck in the United States was the book being sent to educators. I know because my mom had a copy of the first book to review for classrooms. I read it and loved it.

So it gets tossed in with a select few 'new books' and all the old ones that are done every year: Witch of Blackbird Pond Where the Red Fern Grows Island of the Blue Dolphins see a theme? So kids get this cool new book and holy shitballs

I think her key move was including enough details to hint at a large fictional world, while confining most of the action to one building, so she didn't have to work out all the details of the wider world. And that vagueness gave room for fans to use their imagination.

Interesting to find out this way that RH/BS has me blocked, when I haven’t been in publishing for a decade.

JKR does 1 thing well in the HP books I will give her credit for, she created a good sandbox for people to imprint on & cover themselves like a comfort blanket, myself included. It's like early minecraft but literary, selling the power fantasy of the special chosen one school.

It's the same reason the xmen are popular I think, there's something very attractive about a bunch of misfits having a school experience that isn't boring & traumatizing in the real life way, YOU can be special magical kid. & frankly like with Minecraft, we should just move on.
