Yeah the fact that you can't call 911 for an ambulance without getting the cops involved is responsible for a lot of deathshttps://twitter.com/DatPremmy/status/1306885616836239361 …

The most annoying thing about “who are you going to call when something goes wrong” argument is a lot of times people are /trying/ to call someone else and the police just show up anyway.

Wait, SERIOUSLY?!? Why do the police turn up if you call an ambulance?! Are they going to arrest the heart attack? O.o

My understanding is that they don't always send police, but once you call 911 you have no control over whether or not police are sent - the dispatcher will send your details to all the emergency services (fire, police, medical) and they'll respond as they see fit

You can call an ambulance company directly, I've done it before.

in the event of an emergency it’s not very likely that one would have the wherewithal to look up an ambulance company’s number.

It freaked me the fuck out when my arm dislocated in a friend's pool and the cops showed up to gawp at me in my speedos. Also had 911 operators threaten to send them to my flat when I've called from home, which isn't really what you want with a major limb out of the socket.

Yeah when my father died in his sleep we called an ambulance. 4 cops and a Sargent showed up and treated me and my mother (both white women in the suburbs) like we might have murdered him.

caveat, anonymous medium post, but: this guy talks about the tedium of patrol, driving around waiting for something to happen, and then leaping at any chance to make things happenhttps://medium.com/@OfcrACab/confessions-of-a-former-bastard-cop-bb14d17bc759 …

hence the patrol guys showing up to fucking ambulance calls, they're bored and they're hoping for a chance to live out their fantasies of violence

Here on Martha's Vineyard (where I was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years), police responded to all fires. Usually just did traffic control, but sometimes arrested civilians interfering with firefighting operations. Once the arrested a drunk woman who insisted on going 1/2

back into her house, which was on fire, to rescue her pet chicken. She was an off-duty cop. Her law-enforcement career didn't go well after that. If it had happened in a big city she'd probably be a captain by now.
