Some editor should've given her a talking-to about the apostrophes to stand in for "dropped Hs" years agohttps://twitter.com/NickMDuffy/status/1306273216189665280 …

If you're throwing a bunch of phonetic spellings in there and liberally sprinkling every spoken line with apostrophes and contractions and whatnot, it trips the reader up. Every sentence becomes a decoding (and wincing) exercise, which snaps you right out of the book.

Yeah I mean jfc I was being taught that "eye-dialect" was obsolete and that you shouldn't do it when I was a child, years before Harry Potter came out

A lot of people compared her doing this to Roald Dahl (who was also a piece of work in his personal life and politics), like it's a charming throwback to have Hagrid be this exaggerated caricature with apostrophes all over his words But it gets more grating as time goes on

In a fucking adult mystery novel that's supposed to be addressing serious social issues it's fucking unacceptable

Right? I vaguely remember that I once read that it's kinda bad form because it's unpleasant to read and mostly badly done and it's much better to just state the accent and let the reader "hear" it in their head.

It's also just fundamentally chauvinist, it assumes everyone reading it has the same accent the author does and thinks of it as "normal" speech How'd she like it if I, an American with a Midwestern accent, wrote a story about posh Londoners and put apostrophes for all the Rs
