If you haven't noticed I really, really hate the Prime Directive

The Prime Directive is one of those things where people are composing doctrines *reactively*, rather than proactively, imo.

Another thing about the Prime Directive is it was originally much less extreme than it became in later iterations. But I'll admit I even disagree with the milder form philosophically.

It's also true though that to some extent it's a real life thing. Like, a lot of governments have laws against contacting isolated tribes but (like in Star Trek) allow remote surveillance of them. And if say a natural disaster happens there's an actual debate about intervening.

I personally think keeping uncontacted tribes in what amounts to a zoo for researchers isn't really that great but I get it's a reaction to previous generations just exploiting the fuck out of them.

Yeah I mean if there was observation of crimes against humanity committed by those groups against their people I would say not intervening was a crime against humanity in itself

Well we CAN'T observe them because of the non-interference rule so we have no way of knowing

The thing is that in both Star Trek *and* real life that's not how the policy works though. Like in Star Trek, the Federation sends down scientists to observe pre-warp civilizations all the time, either in disguise or from a secret lab.

And IRL, anthropologists and local governments are aware of where uncontacted tribes exist and keep an eye on them, partly to *make sure* no one contacts them. So observation is definitely in play.

(That's why they're *uncontacted* tribes not *hypothetical* tribes.)

We can't observe them closely enough to state with any degree of confidence no one is being abused

Okay that's a fair characterization.
