(They don't come out and discuss this in detail because put like that it is a kind of hacky role reversal device And then the fact that as soon as she escapes she resurrects Vlad makes Duke ambiguously correct about her)

Yeah I wasn't really sympathetic to the First Bride personally I mean especially given that Dracula probably would have enslaved all the others if Laurel hadn't returned

I mean it's kind of goofy, Duke can clearly mindread, so if she didn't have such a reactionary outlook she could tell if that guy that the First Bride embraced was really a threat or not But also the First Bride is a notorious horrible judge of character so not really necessary

like if I sired somebody and then caught them Embracing a complete shitbird I'd probably be be harder on them than Duke was

It's not her fault, she had like 14 years of life in a peasant hovel and then 600 years of trauma bonding with Vlad, that's her entire existence And she does owe the First Bride for saving her life and being the one to finally kill Vlad at the last minute

It is telling that if you look at it a certain way this is Duke not trusting *herself* She's clearly very confident she can keep all the other lady vampires in line with subtle mind control but she thinks any male vampire is too dangerous to be allowed to live period

Because she's obviously still carrying trauma of having everything about her, including her orientation, wiped blank from just one look into Vlad's eyes

I kind of headcanon that the reason the First Bride finally turned on Vlad is that in their telepathic hivemind she could sense Duke's agony, that Vlad deciding to enslave a lesbian was a new level of total violation, and he just didn't care and found it amusing

Which is why, you know, the ironic contrast with Duke deciding the First Bride's sexuality needed to be cured was what made her lose faith again

It's not really explored in depth but the knowledge that most of those other brides in the room had lived their entire lives trapped in a sunken place for possibly centuries, only to get mowed down by hunters defending a guy who is invincible, probably really messed with her

Something deep about how the reason things shook out the way they did was the only two Brides to survive were the First and the Last One because she was the oldest and most powerful and one because she was the youngest and least under his control

Elegant ethnically ambiguous older lady finishes Embracing a lumpy MAGA construction worker guy and watches smiling as he lumbers around testing his powers When the door slams open and an angry pink haired teenager storms in "Penelope? No, NOOO!"
