My first thought after thinking about how much I say “este” was wondering if it’s the kind of filler word stutterers get stuck on in particular in Mandarin too

Yes, with the bonus that if you're a Mandarin speaker in the US you might get mistaken for going on a muttering racist rant to yourself

Imagine if you were stuck in some country where an "istae" is a misogynist slur or something and you happened to be standing next to a large group of women while having a conversation on the phone with your parents

They're just staring at you getting madder and madder while you're unknowingly going "wh**es, wh**es, wh**es... wh******res..."

Well... We use a Lot of misogistic and homofóbic slurs as standar sware worlds, like puto (fag) and puta (whore) without not really wanting to insult gay people or women (like anglos use fuck when they don't mean Sex). We are trying to change this, but still.

We do at least know they’re swear words though

Yeah that's a separate but interesting issue, how in a lot of places "Putos!" or "Putas!" is a generic "I stubbed my toe" swear word like "Dammit!" or "Fuck!" And it's hard to convince people for whom it's just part of their language that it's misogynist and should change

Kind of like US vs UK English speakers fighting over the word "c*nt" and whether it's okay to use that word as a general swear word like "asshole"

It's interesting what makes an obscene word become "generic" that way Like in Italian "cazzo" (cock) is just a general thing you say when angry, you yell it like "Fuck!" as an expletive or you call someone "cazzo" like "asshole"

The *reason* it's a swear word probably is tied to implicit homophobia and images of sexual violence, just like "Fuck you!" in English obviously is, but if you try to tell people they mustn't say it as a result you'll get a lot of blank looks
