I get that she's more idealistic and is like "being a vampire is hierarchal, I can't be a part of a hierarchy", but I'd be more like "uh I should be dismantling fascism before I start handing out immortality"

I think it's interesting that
@BootlegGirl immediately came to the conclusion that Duke is a straight up villain who is obviously already on the path of becoming the new Dracula while everyone else is saying she's just you in a movie1 reply 1 retweet 6 likes -
I mean those aren't necessarily contradictory

The movie doesn't give a lot of time or credence to Dracula's POV but his excuse that he used to be a nice guy but got bored with it after a millennium kind of does ring true with how Duke is running things

I mean Dracula could have, you know, prevented the Porajmos or something, if he was really all that benevolent you'd have thought some of those centuries would've looked better

Yeah well Duke's been head vampire for 40 years now and LA isn't doing that great, especially in the Hollywood toxic masculinity department Why was Weinstein running around all that time with all his blood

The First Bride character is interesting to me, she comes off as basically a blackpilled centrist She was a genuine true believer that Vlad was an awesome great person for hundreds of years and only slowly came around to the idea he was full of shit

She lets Duke take over after he dies, despite being 10x her age, because she doesn't believe in anything herself enough to be a leader She believes in Duke's ideas for a while and then comes to decide she's full of shit too

I mean for one thing Duke is now explicitly a conversion therapist The First Bride is incorrigibly het and cannot be truly happy and fulfilled without being in a mutually loving relationship with a man And Duke believes this to a sickness

And puts her in a hole and keeps her there until such time as this condition is alleviated

(They don't come out and discuss this in detail because put like that it is a kind of hacky role reversal device And then the fact that as soon as she escapes she resurrects Vlad makes Duke ambiguously correct about her)

Yeah I wasn't really sympathetic to the First Bride personally I mean especially given that Dracula probably would have enslaved all the others if Laurel hadn't returned

I mean it's kind of goofy, Duke can clearly mindread, so if she didn't have such a reactionary outlook she could tell if that guy that the First Bride embraced was really a threat or not But also the First Bride is a notorious horrible judge of character so not really necessary
