Arthur Chu added,
"just a thinking word" isn't the discourse, it's a dodgy comedy sketch which without explaining 这个/那个 =this/that just makes Chinese sound like assholes...again.
He literally says it's the word for "that" right at the beginning
So it's functionally (literally?) just repeating "that, that, that" in the middle of a sentence as you formulate the rest of what you're trying to say?
Yes, it's like saying "What's that, that, that movie you were telling me about"
I suppose that because Mandarin doesn't have articles as such, "that" in this context is more like "the" It's a filler word or "stalling" word because it's indicating you're about to say something without actually saying it
So if in English I'm searching for a word on the tip of my tongue I might get stuck on "the" "What's the, the, the thing on your phone" "An app?" "Yes, the app that, that, that, celebrities reply to you and you go viral"
Sometimes English speakers do in fact insert "the" or "that" where it doesn't grammatically belong for this reason, like with proper nouns "So you're going to the dance with that, uh, that, that, Jeremy"
Fair point. And it's a pattern of speech that feels natural to English first, or especially only, speakers without thought to how the sentence structure sounds.
