I think it's a very minor example of jerkish behavior from someone who suffered a lot in life and don't see the point in trying to define him by it as you have
People really do view never making mistakes or being a jerk in public as the social cost of what they see as all the benefits of fame, and get very passionate about punishing celebrities they see as ungrateful bastards
