Look, it's a shitty thing to do, I'm not arguing with that It's also, honestly, in my view a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, and something that very much does illustrate the whole burden of fame thing

Adults are rude to kids unnecessarily all the time, I ignored a kid saying hi to me just the other day because I was in a shitty mood, it's only when you're famous that people record that interaction in their memory and save it to bust it out years later

So maybe don’t be rude to kids unnecessarily?

Okay, I can try not to, but eventually I will, because I'm not naturally comfortable around kids and I have very limited reserves of patience or emotional energy

If you were a celebrity and didn’t give autographs I would assume you would have a canned response “sorry, I don’t do that but have a great day nice to meet you” or something. Not hard, not emotionally draining.

I would not, my strategy would be the same one it is right now, which is to stare at my phone and pretend I didn't hear you It's a very common strategy precisely because acknowledging the other person IS emotionally draining and opens the door for other people to engage

Really? If a small kid asked you for your autograph you would ignore them and stare at your phone? That seems like a jerk move to me.

If it was the only time in my entire life it had ever happened to me then it would obviously be a jerk thing to do, and something I'd be very unlikely to do - who wouldn't be excited to be important enough to be asked?

As with any social interaction, you have to ask yourself how it feels the 50th time, or the 500th time, or the 500,000th time

It wasn’t the 500000th time for that kid. You can be polite even on the 500000th time.

You *can* but you probably won't

You should.

Okay but you won't, and if you really do think celebrities should be "held to a higher standard" you'll be disappointed by pretty much everyone
