It's a really interesting gender- and morality-swapped Lost Boys

So you're saying that online you have subtle mind control powers you're using to make everyone agree with you but offline you refrain from doing so

The closest thing there is to an open discussion of her being trans is the angry confrontation with her brother and I think there's some interesting resonance there It's very Emotional Labor Discourse 2019

That scene was honestly really, really, deep and powerful, like it kind of blew me away with the multitudes there

The bit with Laurel worrying that being trans would mean she violates the main rule and Duke just shuts that shit right down, all without ever outright saying any of it just sold the entire movie for me

The agility with which the screenwriter and director handle that moment honestly blew me away I was kind of just like "...did that really just happen?"

The movie is *about* T*RFiness without actually having T*RFs and that's a good thing, it means Duke gets to keep our sympathy Even though it remains the case that Laurel's personal history plays into her skepticism about Duke's black-and-white philosophy

Like, Duke is clearly based on second-wave radfems - she's even from that time period, and her relationship with Vlad is a riff on Valerie Solanas and Andy Warhol But, you know, Andrea Dworkin was trans inclusive (at one point, anyway) while still being who she was

I saw a trans woman I follow talking about reeling from the news that a man she'd considered a mentor and a friend and an ally had been MeTooed and saying she had the sick feeling "I know how T*RFs feel, I know why they become T*RFs If I weren't trans that could be me"

The trauma response of realizing the depths of just how shitty men can be and how far they'll go to fuck you over just to prove they can and there's NOTHING you can put past an abusive man and ANYTHING could be some kind of cruel trick, etc "We are arrant knaves all"

(I'm not trying to excuse T*RFs as a phenomenon or even say this is true of most people who are T*RFs With all movements there are people who build an ideology based on their own deeply sublimated traumas and there are randos who jump on the bandwagon because it benefits them)

yeah I mean the way Duke kind of plays on Laurel's trauma in defending the main rule is pretty good "Oh come on, as if YOU haven't been through plenty of shit" "well"
