I always have mixed feelings about stories about what a lush Andre the Giant was because, you know, it's funny talking about how much he had to drink to get drunk but also he was self-medicating for chronic pain

I saw him in an airport once. A boy of about ten screwed up his courage to ask him for an autograph and Andre said "No."

Maybe the chronic pain played a part here? I struggle with handwriting and I don’t have chronic pain and I’m considered able bodied. I have anxiety every time I have to sign something. Perhaps refusing autographs was self care.

He could have explained that. He didn’t. It was easy to overhear because he was loud. He just looked at the kid and said “No.” The kid was crushed and Andre was an asshole in that situation.

Yeah, see, the more time you spend talking to people the more likely it becomes a thing and you're stuck in this whole social situation you don't want to be in

I saw Bill Nye get asked for a selfie at the airport once and while he handled it more graciously he still did so with a very clear awareness of this dynamic (he never stopped walking, "Okay we're gonna do a walking selfie, walk with me")

I have no problem with that. I would have had no problem if Andre said “Sorry I don’t give autographs, it causes a big hassle but thanks for being a fan and have a great day”. He was just rude to a little kid.

I mean yeah, and he was a lifelong sufferer of acromegaly who, at the point in time you said this happened, had chronic pain that left him almost immobile

How do you know when this happened? He was at the time mobile enough to be in movies. He was a jerk to a little boy.

He was having serious mobility issues during his time in wrestling and you said it was long after that
