I always have mixed feelings about stories about what a lush Andre the Giant was because, you know, it's funny talking about how much he had to drink to get drunk but also he was self-medicating for chronic pain

He said he did the movie because he wanted to play a good guy character, too, he was talking to Reiner about how WWF was making him into a heel and he hated the idea of fans yelling abuse at him and hating him etc. Sigh

If you've read the book there's just so little distance between Andre and Fezzik, like Fezzik's whole backstory is that he essentially was an old-timey wrestling heel, making a living as a sideshow beating up three guys at once and having people scream "LOOK AT THAT ANIMAL" etc

Andre is a good example of WWE propaganda in action because during the period most of the footage of his matches exists he's very clearly barely mobile but the WWE nonetheless over 30 years managed to build up his brief time at the top of the company into a 'legendary' run.
