I always have mixed feelings about stories about what a lush Andre the Giant was because, you know, it's funny talking about how much he had to drink to get drunk but also he was self-medicating for chronic pain

Drinking hard liquor in big pitchers like beer just so he could be mobile enough to do stunts, Jesus Christ It's telling that the Princess Bride people talk openly about how much effort it was for him to do this movie, while WWF never breathed a word about it (kayfabe)

He said he did the movie because he wanted to play a good guy character, too, he was talking to Reiner about how WWF was making him into a heel and he hated the idea of fans yelling abuse at him and hating him etc. Sigh

If you've read the book there's just so little distance between Andre and Fezzik, like Fezzik's whole backstory is that he essentially was an old-timey wrestling heel, making a living as a sideshow beating up three guys at once and having people scream "LOOK AT THAT ANIMAL" etc

I loved that Cary brought it up, because it gets overlooked.

It’s entirely possible you already know this. I apologize if it’s old info. I enjoyed the Elwes audiobook As You Wish. He tells a lot of the Andre story in a sympathetic way. I was vaguely aware of it but not in that detail.

Yeah, I've heard a number of his castmates mention the drinking but they always seem so kind and definitely mention his pain, and what an absolute mensch he was. I feel like they all saw and love the whole man, and it comes through. Their admiration & awe & sadness.
