Mandy Patinkin is saying that Inigo Montoya's arc is a cautionary tale about revenge, but I'm not sure it was exactly that It's not BAD he killed Rugen, Rugen was a fucking bastard who needed killing It's just that he didn't have a plan for what to do next

There's a kind of melodramatic tragedy to it, yeah It's a bittersweet thing, his revenge quest has made Inigo something he never could have been otherwise (the second-greatest swordsman in the world) but it's narrowed his life to *just* being that, and not really by choice

I always thought Inigo's story was a take on what David Foster Wallace was talking about when writing his essay about pro tennis players That to be really, really great at something you have to be born with talent but you also have to sacrifice your life to it

There's no such thing as an Olympic athlete, much less an Olympic gold medalist, who didn't give up their whole childhood to just being about an Olympic athlete, and it's impossible to really answer the question "Was it worth it?", there's no basis for comparison

I've always wondered, if my father had realized how good I was at mathematics, say, the age of 5 or 6, how good I could have been if I was dedicated to that pursuit (or chess, which I'm also pretty good at).

I'm absolutely nothing 'special' now (stopped after BS in applied math), but I was always 5-6 years ahead of my peers in math. It was never a particular focus of mine outside a couple hours at 4 years old when I made my father teach me multiplication/division.

I know that's the narrative certain sports like gymnastics push but in reality it's not true. Lots of sports aren't even taken up until the teen years, and then people end up at the Olympics more by somehow just being better than others though there's no reason to explain it.

Then there are people like Michael Johnson, he wasn't even the fastest high school runner in Texas, but by chance the coach at Baylor met him and figured "hey give him a shot". As a high school senior he'd impress no one, he ended up with the world records in the 200 and 400.

nah, my coaches wanted me to become an olympic swimmer and my childhood was very ordinary. i also have a cousin who is a paralympic gold medalist who didn’t begin training till she was 21.

Plenty of sports are started later. Your overall point is good, but this quibble is real. Water sports outside of swimming and diving have 20s as the entry age on average. Archery will have competitors in 50s. Medalists in 30s and 40s (though avg medalist age 27) even cycling.
