Mandy Patinkin is saying that Inigo Montoya's arc is a cautionary tale about revenge, but I'm not sure it was exactly that It's not BAD he killed Rugen, Rugen was a fucking bastard who needed killing It's just that he didn't have a plan for what to do next

I always thought Inigo's story was a take on what David Foster Wallace was talking about when writing his essay about pro tennis players That to be really, really great at something you have to be born with talent but you also have to sacrifice your life to it

There's no such thing as an Olympic athlete, much less an Olympic gold medalist, who didn't give up their whole childhood to just being about an Olympic athlete, and it's impossible to really answer the question "Was it worth it?", there's no basis for comparison

Narrowed yes, but the path he followed intersected with Fezzik and DPR, bringing connection and meaning to his life in other ways. Not that this is better than not being a revenge swordsman- just that life is messy and who's to say he doesn't grow even more after the story ends?
