That's actually the thing that I think would most distinguish Nightingale from TLOU2 (the commonality being "woman subjected to witnessing brutal murder of loved ones crosses desolate terrain to do a brutal revenge"): the ending says, when you seek revenge, sometimes, good for you

Reading this... I love a good wrangle about definitions but honestly the point about aesthetic that @loudpenitent made earlier has more clarity for me which is ironic given the term (referring to the article you shared) pre-dates the entrenching of that aesthetic? So,

I could get Steven Universe, She-Ra... maybe even something like Humans coming under the umbrella of Hopepunk (although for all my issues with the series, ironically SU comes closest to actual 'punk' because it's a show where there clearly is a working out, an engineering of +

whatever counts as 'hope') but if it's also meant to include LotR and Fury Road... that feels like just talking about 'fantasy/sci-fi with happy endings' rather than an actual, y'know, punking of the hope, if that makes sense?

Although #KombuchaFace... thinking about origins of cyberpunk, maybe Fury Road makes a sense in that it's 'subverting' the grimy apocalyptic aesthetic to end on an upbeat... but then I go back to my previous question about how much Hopepunk's just 'sci-fi with a happy ending'.

Is "upbeat" enough? It doesn't feel like it in Fury Road. I'll give you "punk" but I'm not convinced on "hope"

No, nor I tbh. Ditto on 'upbeat' being enough. Actually thinking about it, the prior mention of Sense8 gives some clarity to whatever sense of genre that's being created (would Orphan Black also nudge it's way in?) as again there's a sense of hope as a function of intent+effort.

The She-Ra theme song is hopepunk in its truest form. It is the yardstick by which all hopepunk should be measured. In this essay I wi…

No, you're absolutely right though and this is key to the point I'm trying to make about the sense in which hopepunk is a coherent concept. "We're gonna win *in the end*" is one of the big things, and that emphasis on the darkness before the light is why She-ra qualifies

I don't consider most of the pastelcore cartoons to be hopepunk bc either their world is too benign or it's too bleak (Steven Universe is faux-hopepunk that peels back and is really grimdark; Adventure Time is grimdark from the start)

But Steven Universe DID win and DID create a better universe for everyone in the story The darkness comes with this bittersweet thing where he himself can't live in the utopia he brought into being

Yeah, he won, but in the meantime you're learning that all of these characters have deep-seated psychological issues that have only worsened over millennia. I'm not sure there's space for that kind of ambivalence in hopepunk.

I would disagree. The ending felt hollow. I didn't see a good future for Steven. Nor did I feel like the galaxy was going to remain stable for everyone but him, either
