I think they're looking at the real world and confusing it with fiction. Which is the opposite of what usually happens.

I think some of it boils down to the traditional works of the genre, like 1984, Vonnegut's 2BR02B, Aldiss' Supertoys, etc. not having a happy ending - despite depicting resistance to the society. YA dystopias are a shift in this trend.

The original stated definition of hopepunk specifically said the story doesn't have to have a happy ending to be "hopepunk", though, and then went into all this overwrought dramatic stuff about how the nature of hope is the duty to fight onward no matter how much you lose
