Some bad fucking luck that all this pent-up rage is landing on a first-time Senegalese-French female filmmaker who was aiming for satire, and not on the many people selling young girls' bodies for entertainment for real

I mean, I'm not actually saying all the backlash was racist -- a lot of people genuinely did not know Maïmouna Doucouré existed when this started and assumed the movie must've been made by a white guy and set in America But I do think there's bad actors involved here

Honest answer? Because the girls in Cuties are "Twerking" and any form of black dancing is "Porn".
It has everything to do with how people sexualize black girls and black culture. It's "cute" when it's Becky with bad rhythm in Dance Class.

I remember watching pageants for 6 year olds which did things as bad if not worse than Cuties. That's the culture where Honey Boo Boo came from, for example.

There is a whole TV series called “toddlers in tiaras” that’s basically an American celebration of exactly this kind of culture. It’s where Honey Boo Boo came from.

I watched a couple of episodes and realized it was bad for my mental health. As a mom of a young girl, I found myself telling at the screen.
