...how the bleep did Twitter get into accusing Judaism of being Gnostic? Do these people even know what Gnosticism is? Or what Judaism is?

Some Christians get really, really into saying basically any belief system that isn't Christianity is "Gnostic", because the Christian vs Gnostic struggle against "heresy" is the ancient conflict they've imprinted on

Huh. As someone who's never been Christian, but has taken classes on the Early Church, I'm just...really confused what they think "gnostic" means, because it's really the wrong heresy to accuse Jews of.

I don't know anything about this guy in particular but a lot of annoying Christians are stuck on this idea that *only* orthodox Christianity is "salvation by grace" and all other religions/belief systems are "salvation by works", and they come up with a name for the latter

Like, a lot of people today arguing in the Catholic tradition are big on calling any concept of "being rewarded for good deeds" "Pelagianism" Blaming the most basic and universal concept in human morality on one British monk, calling the reverse "Augustinianism" (Hey there Liz)

How is that arguing in the Catholic tradition, though? Catholicism treats both works and faith as necessary for salvation, and has a whole concept of penance as a solution for one's works not being good enough...it seems more like a form of Protestants attacking Catholicism.

Augustine is seen as the father (or one of the major fathers) of the Catholic tradition, and the *characterization* of Catholicism as "works and faith" is something emphasized by Protestants in order to attack Catholics
