INTERESTING thing I did learn while trying to data scrape for stuff about TLOU2 is that Ian Alexander's character on Discovery is going to be a Trill, which is interesting because it means they're going to directly confront the metaphor

Oof That's actually disappointing, many people were hoping to just have a trans character who is a 100% normal human rather than turning trans people into a science fiction metaphor again

Yeah it... still could go well, and maybe the non-binary character will fit that role? I think it's still possible for Alexander's character to be a normal trans person, it's just going to be... Either Very Not a Big Deal, or problematic, IMO

If the Trill symbiotes could permanently host in humans I would wonder if he was a trans guy who went to the Trill to get help with dysphoria through the past life memories, but his name being... I can't remember what it is, but it sounds like a Trill species host

But like, if Alexander is playing a joined Trill (he might not be) then the simplest thing would just be to say he's an AFAB Trill host, transitioned, then got a Trill who was most recently in a female host as is convention, and is just... a Trill. Who also happens to be AFAB

Yeah I guess it just raises the question of whether having Trill past life memories causes dysphoria and whether this is different if the host has their own preexisting memories of dysphoria With Ezri (who was an untrained, unsuited host) the dysphoria metaphor was pretty strong

Ezri talking about waking up feeling sick and confused and paralyzed because her body didn't feel like her body etc

I honestly liked Jadzia so much I dropped the show right before she left, so I never saw that part

She may be an outlier because she was never meant to be a host but it's interesting that despite being a cishet woman at first like Jadzia implicitly was, Ezri finds having to "be Jadzia" so distressing she *does* dump Worf and cut herself off from Jadzia's old life hard

What's interesting about this is that it DOES make for a very strong trans metaphor, probably without the writers' knowledge or intention The Trill Council essentially forces all new hosts into "woodworking"

Anyway while a lot of Ezri haters hated her on general principle it's also true that she's easy to hate because she deliberately contrasts what people found so compelling about Jadzia, her general easy calm confidence in being who she is regardless of her "masculine" traits
