man feels there are more good Mandarin-language movies and television shows nowadays than there were when I was actually learning the language A lot of the old movies we watched were clearly filmed in Cantonese and dubbed in Mandarin which felt like it kind of missed the point

Given that so many people will be watching it in a different dialect anyway, or just reading the hanzi subs (because China is in fact a multilingual society), they figured they might as well save money on having sound equipment when they shoot the movie

I don't think this is really so common anymore in a new, wealthier and more modern China but old school Chinese TV and movies have this all the time, it's pretty noticeable
