It's still one of the most negative depictions of the CIA I've seen in a big popcorn movie Ross himself may be more or less presented as a decent guy but he goes ahead and tells us Killmonger is also a CIA agent and everything he does in Wakanda is exactly what he's trained tohttps://twitter.com/AlexandraErin/status/1302603237690945537 …

AKA, my least favorite part of Black Panther. ...I need more caffeine because I almost typed "Pink Panther", which was more about destroying the reputation of the Sûreté than rehabilitating the CIA. https://twitter.com/lmlauramarsh/status/1301528234715209730 …

Except that revelation about killmongers tactics goes uncriticissd and uncommented. And is never linked to any larger criticism of imperialism. If it's a negative depiction, it's a completely toothless one

Oh come on, there was no reason to bring it up at all except to make the CIA look bad It's the most disturbing moment in the film, it's the moment you realize Killmonger is a total nihilist who doesn't care about Wakanda any more than any other country

Or to establish that the CIA (which otherwise goes unopposed and uncriticised in the film) does this shit all the time, and the problem with Killmonger is that he's doing it for different reasons to the CIA.

Okay, sure, if you're determined to take the movie in bad faith Coogler could have done the exact opposite if he wanted to make the CIA look good (have Ross go "This isn't what we were trained to do!"), he didn't

Again, the burning of the garden is an *intrinsically horrifying moment*, it's something that's supposed to make you feel a twist in your gut (destroying something that's lasted for thousands of years just because you can)

The idea that this is something "our guys" do "all the time" is meant to come across as deeply fucked up Ross, notably, gives no attempted justification for it in his line, no "That's what we had to do to stop the Taliban" or whatever

And there's also no condemnation or even reaction from anyone else in the scene. The lack of justification is more than balance by the lack of criticism. It's just 'well, that's a thing that happens'
