Some of the top aces in WWII were very mild, normie, clean cut guys, devout Christians who went to church every Sunday and never swore and were fully loyal to their wives and kids Some were total basket cases, drug abusers and alcoholics, womanizers and harassers

On the Axis side, no one who fought in the Luftwaffe could be said to be a "good guy" but they were just as likely to speak freely among themselves about how Hitler was a clown as they were to be frothing hardcore Nazis

And in both cases it didn't *matter*, there were plenty of pilots the more politically minded brass would've preferred to cut loose but actually good fighter pilots were such a precious resource in the war they needed all of them

This came up a while back in that scandal where the astronaut lady was stalking her ex and drove across the country in a stimulant-fueled manic episode wearing astronaut diapers to confront him People very carefully saying that being "weird" is normal for astronauts

It's a very high stress job picked from a very small talent pool and the old school test pilots who became astronauts had plenty of less than savory means of "blowing off steam" that the media just graciously didn't report

Nowadays being an astronaut also means having to be a role model for the kids And that's kind of a tall order, especially for people coming into NASA by the military route rather than the PhD academic route (although academia also has... its problems)

read an anecdote about the military this civilian reporter trying to figure out, how the fuck does this guy put up with all these fucking assholes in his squad

and the soldier says, well look, the really important thing is that if i catch a bullet with my stomach running across a road then any one of these guys is going to run back out, grab me by the strap, and pull me into cover if they can do that then all the rest is small potatoes

i've read about a million military sf novels and thisis the difference between the real ones and the fake ones in the fake ones every soldier is either an ideologically committed ubermensch or a cowardly liberal in the real ones the space marines are full of ordinary assholes

Right, the whole "battle buddy" thing, trauma bonding Your primary loyalty is to the other guys around you and not to any institution or abstract principle because in a life or death situation it has to be This can, unfortunately, lead to problems

It's really obviously the reason the military has such a culture of covering for rape and abuse among its members, for one thing
