Still have existential resentment towards people with visual art skills. It's one of those things like being cis where it's not fair for me to blame you for having it but my life would be so much less shtty if I had what you have

Like I get that artists aren't obligated to do labor for people for free. But it really sucks that y'all have exclusive power to represent an entire domain of human communication that the rest of us will never be able to express unless we are very rich and can hire you

And other "thought workers" don't get paid the way everyone says artists should be paid. I guess if you become a tenure track professor or your novel hits the NYT best seller list, you've got that tenuously. But society values visual art far more than any other thought work.

And I'm sorry, but having had a tenure track professor job, artists have it so much easier. You can take time off and no one says you're "off the art track" and won't hire you back into your field. You can pretty much always get people to hire you for commissions

And having visual art skills even makes breaking into technology easier - apart from gaming, UI design is basically drawing. And not being good at drawing may be a challenge for me trying to be a programmer

It really sucks and I wish artists would check their privilege instead of talking about how much those of us born with brains that cannot do the amazing feats you can (no sarcasm, it is amazing) don't appreciate you

This is probably a jackass post. It's just I looked up how much it would cost to hire someone to make some very basic pixel art sprites so I could make a simple game, and I found an article literally saying I should pay $1000 to $20000 for every pixel art sprite

It is not typical for anyone working on an indie game to get paid $1,000 to $20,000 for anything

At the point where you’re contracting out artists you’re already an established professional even if you’re an otherwise solo indie dev... well or you’re independently wealthy

The problem is that's basically a restatement of the problem she's talking about - that you're not allowed to be *just an indie dev* if you can't make art, that you get people saying that just by not doing your own art you get judged by the standards of established professionals.

I mean this was an article which took the Skullgirls kickstarter and said what they pay their artists should be standard But like .. it just felt demoralizing

I mean, there's possibly a reasonable argument for a compensation scale where once you have $830k, be it from fundraising or from sales revenue, the artists get a decent sized chunk of that. [And I assume 20k is at least a character's whole moveset, not just one static sprite]
