Thinking about it, the Pasifika term "mana" has been ganked really badly by Western fantasy to mean "magical electric charge" and it... doesn't really mean that Again, because ancient peoples didn't draw this modern divide between "magic" and "non-magic" kinds of "power"https://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1302402100341559296 …

Qi can be inborn but it can also be cultivated, it's a whole thing The word "qi" is just another way of saying how much "power" you have

A person having "mana" just means having "power" Being physically beautiful is a form of mana, being from an aristocratic family is mana, being physically wealthy is mana As well as the kind of mana that comes from being "gifted" in some harder-to-explain way

I mean that applies to most of the terms being used for fantasy stuff. Magus comes to mind.

Yeah most "genre terms" are just slightly more obscure versions of regular words, like a "portal" is just a word for "door", "runes" are just old-fashioned letters, etc

White Wolf was shameless about this, like the names for Vampiric Disciplines are just deliberately fancy synonyms for mundane concepts -- "Potence" = "Strength", "Celerity" = "Speed", "Vicissitude" = "Change", "Obfuscate" = "Hide"

think one of my favorite ones in recent memory is Final Fantasy 14's use of "glamour" for illusions. Which does have some basis in how the term was used before its modern meaning but its also the kind of obtuse archaic English used to make the game feel more "fantasy" than usual.

This is that thing where people’s sense of what a word means is colored by the context where they first encounter it. Like how a lot of Americans think a “fatwa” is a death sentence, when it’s actually just a ruling of Islamic religions law.
