It's very similar to the Greek term "charisma", which in Christian tradition can mean supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit like faith healing and so on, but also does mean what we use it for now -- just the ability to speak well and make people like you

That whole divide is honestly something that drives me a bit nuts about a lot of fantasy. Ditto elaborately codified systems of magic with clearly-delineated "here's what this can and can't do" rules.

Gimme more pre-scientific revolution settings, where blacksmithing and summoning the dead are both talked about as magical practices and wizards know how to make magic happen but have like a dozen bullshit ideas as to why it works that are all contradictory.
