She succeeds by working smarter, not harder She wins the big battle by pulling the desperate Hail Mary of starting an avalanche Etc

It's a big difference from the perfect paragon hero Mulan from the original song was, but it makes for a more interesting story for modern audiences, I think, and certainly is one more suited to Disney's strengths

Anyway Mulan being a magical supersoldier just isn't a good storytelling decision in general It makes her decision to disguise herself and go into the army hardly any kind of sacrifice or challenge at all

Every overcompensation Disney does to make their female characters stronger ironically robs them of their strength.

"You're unsuited for the rage of war So pack up, go home, you're through How could I... make a man... out of you" is the emotional heart of the original movie Mulan has *fulfilled her legal obligation*, she can just go home now as a washout judged unfit, without further penalty

But she WON'T Because, beyond all the stuff about feeling like she has to do her duty and protect her father and so on... she has something to prove, for herself

The thing where she figures out she can *use* the weights to climb the pole, that what she thought were her weaknesses were really her strengths *That's the whole movie*

I've watched (animated) Mulan twice, but I have watched just "I'll Make a Man Out of You" more times than I can count and it makes me cry every time.

IMO it's the most perfect training montage ever created.

"Your weakness was your power all along" is the coolest moment of eucatastrophe a story can have, if you do it well enough to really earn it It's SO much better than your weaknesses just disappearing

I don't think the goofy way they played the drag scene at the ending of OG Mulan was the best thing But the fact that Mulan saves the Emperor because she knows how to act like a woman, and no one pays any attention to where women go or what they do

It feels telling that so many of these warrior women characters produced by sexist patriarchal societies are so typically blatantly superior to most men at fighting. The implication to me seems to be that the original writers thought their Obstacle to Be Overcome was their gender

Like, the whole ridiculous nerd -2 Strength meme has always been stupid; these stories framed the obstacle not in terms of "your gender prevents you from being a superior warrior" but in terms of "well you need to overcome/surpass/discard the social normative place of Woman."

Were you one of the people in the conversation last week about Sherlock Holmes, and how part of his superpower is the ability to remember that street kids, servants, and women are all people with eyes and ears and the ability to notice and remember things?
