well yeah but then doesn't that pretty much put a fork in the concept of restorative justice If somebody doesn't believe that what they did was wrong then making them do something to mitigate the damage does fuckall in terms of salving the wound

I dunno, usually the whole thing about vengeance is that from the avenger's side it's also kind of mutually exclusive with the desire for reconciliation "I don't want his apology, I want him dead"

I think what she's trying to do here is point out that retributive justice isn't just a matter of people being simpleminded or ignorant, and likewise the people who call retributive justice a failure aren't just trying to be "nice"

The desire for retribution is a deeply felt universal human imperative, it's one of the greatest sources of fulfillment and pleasure for human beings, it's core to our sense of identity and wholeness and community People LOVE punishing, you wouldn't be human if you didn''

The reason it's a problem isn't that people who like punishing are bad people and we're more evolved, better people It's, ideally, an acknowledgment that it doesn't work, that long-term it's caused incredible harm

(But most people are kind of iffy on that too -- attempts to replace retributive justice generally just haven't worked Maybe the horrors of the "cycle of revenge" are just part of the price of being human, maybe we have to just accept that)

"He's never really going to accept he's wronged you and he's the bad guy, you're just gonna have to find some way to live with him regardless" "No I don't, I could NOT live with him, by making him DEAD"

"Okay but he's REALLY not gonna accept that If you really won't be satisfied by anything but blood, then he and all the people who agree with him are going to fight back and kill you and yours too"

And in practice, because you don't have godlike power bestowed on you for being objectively in the right, even if you are, you have to make that choice "Okay, I'll back down and find some kind of compromise" vs. "FINE BRING THEM ON LET THE BLOOD FLOW"

A lot of this kind of talk comes from a kind of exhaustion, like the 20th century broke world records for the number of bodies piled up as people tested out the theory that we could finally end all these "cycles of history" if we just killed enough of the right people

And it kind of seems like it didn't work, although, of course, there will always be people who said we just gave up too soon And people who say just because you give up on the killing strategy doesn't mean the people who think you're the ones who need killing have given up
