Contra is going full Margaret Atwood with her extreme level of emphasis on Odysseus executing his slaves for sleeping with Penelope's suitors, which... okay fine, that's the most fucked up moment in Homer, but where are you taking it

"I don't think Odysseus is supposed to be an asshole" lady he literally invades allied territory to force one of his friends to kill his innocent daughter just to facilitate sea travel to stage a war for a woman he doesn't want to marry

Literally the first thing he does in the Odyssey (chronologically, not narratively) is circle back around to rape and pillage yet another a Trojan settlement AFTER THE WAR HAS ALREADY BEEN SETTLED AND WON

This probably bears mentioning, yeah Even though I think ascribing it to "sadism" is kind of misreading the tone of the room in January 2017, after this dude had already used government property to shout "Heil Trump"https://twitter.com/arthur_affect/status/1302045968917884928 …

Also I'm not really defending Odysseus murdering all those suitors but like I don't know if there would have been a similarly reliable way of getting them all to fuck off and leave Ithaka after literally a decade of sunk costs what's to stop them from poisoning Odysseus

So a lot of this is basically unpacking the aphorism that "an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind", which, like, fine, whatever, that's kind of an innocuous pursuit, but I've always found this particular kind of concern to be more than a little disingenuous

Like an eye for an eye only leaves the whole world blind if you take eyes from people who haven't taken eyes If you only take eyes from eye-takers, specifically, and set aside culpability by association, you still have plenty of be-eyeballed people left over

I mean maybe you don't have to have a whole fucking World War I if you don't do this sort of weird tribalistic network bullshit and just shoot Gavrilo Princip in the face and move on with your lives

Princip thought he was committing justified violence against an ongoing injustice -- the tyrannical rule of Serbia by Austria-Hungary -- and there were a lot of people who agreed with him That's why the whole thing blew up

Like, the whole issue with honor-based retributive justice is that it's actually pretty rare that a wrongdoer who gets caught and punished will have them and their family just give in and go, "Okay, you got me, I'm the asshole and I'm sorry, now we're square"

That's the whole thing The way human beings work, nothing successfully dissipates any actual feelings of guilt or remorse you might be having toward someone you harmed more than that person successfully taking revenge on you Hard to still feel sorry after getting punched

And, you know, often getting to punch him is more satisfying and effective than playing the sympathy card anyway But you still generally have to pick one or the other, the whole "restorative justice movement" sets itself up as anti-retribution for this exact reason

House, of all places, summed it up pretty well The episode where House gets shot, and then the shooter himself gets shot in the struggle, and then, improbably, House and the shooter are left in adjacent beds to recover
