Not that they're a meaningful bloc anyway but the idea that Marines would be angry enough about Trump slighting them to respond differently at the polls is pretty laughable They play at having bottomless self-respect, but at the end of the day they don't bring it to the court

You have to constantly remind liberals that conservatives don't actually respond to attacks on veterans with moral indignation At the 2016 DNC you REPEATEDLY had Dems finger-wagging about how rude Trump was to ~great war hero~ John McCain, and all it did was alienate the left

You can go back further too, look at the 2008 DNC, you had the Dems scrambling to kiss McCain's ass repeatedly John Kerry making a big thing about how McCain had been his friend for all these long years Meanwhile, even Jon Stewart breathlessly shouted "SHIT! ON! HIM!"

But yeah you can look at McCain, you can look at the Khans (those gold star parents), you can look at repeated appeals to all the appeals to the veteran or even active duty status of victims of racist police violence Conservatives absolutely do not give a fuck. Whatsoever

And honestly the only reason conservatives harp on the "disrespecting our troops" canard is because the people who REALLY respond to it are liberals/left-of-center moderates, THEY'RE the ones consistently offended by rudeness to the troops, to the point of exploitability

The people who really get mad are the Clymers and Buttigiegs of the world. The only "show of disrespect for the troops" conservatives care about is the "disrespectful act" of being a service member who isn't a bible-thumping cishet white dude

This is one of those really good pieces you don't see them do much anymore, where they don't go for the overt punchline and instead very earnestly and sincerely just write out what a lot of people clearly think but don't say

Like there's plenty of times and places where this would have been a completely uncontroversial patriotic sentimentpic.twitter.com/c7xYFBjw8o

I was about to type out a whole thing about how ancient China balanced its belief that military victory was the greatest glory a state could have and that actual soldiers were the dregs of society to be kept away from your daughters if at all possible

But I'm like, that's not foreign That's completely normal Americans used to openly express that sentiment all the time and they mostly still think it and just don't say it

It's about the only explanation for why any and all actual support ends the instant you're discharged.
