Let me try my hand at it: it's like when you're a teenager, going to a Battle of the Bands that uses the biggest Methodist church in town as a venue, and then it turns out that the friend who invited you is genuinely excited to see you participating in a thing for Jesushttps://twitter.com/KillerMartinis/status/1301652514215952390 …

That feeling of suddenly realizing your chill friend who you thought was just in it to see some high school bros make some music is actually, like, really tits-deep in the love of Christ, without a shred of apathy or irony

i have a feeling the actual battle of bands is not even 1% as awesome as my imagined scenario

It's just a big concert where they try to tell you it's okay most of the acts are bad because you get to officially register this opinion by voting at the end and that makes sitting through them a valid use of your time

"Audience Choice Award"s at film festivals are the same way

Anyway Battles of the Bands are much more common in movies and TV about bands than they are in real life because they're the only occasion on which "rival" musicians would ever have any reason to even be in the same room as each other
