It seems to me that being "religious" or not is a statement more about your emotional orientation, your attitude, the way you feel about the universe around you and the way things shake out and the fact that bad things happen to good people etc.

The intellectual belief about what the facts of the matter are comes afterwards, as with most things, even if it doesn't always seem like it "Believing in God" is more about "I choose to act like things happen for a reason and end up working out for the best"
