I write a bunch of white cards that are Asian and white racial stereotypes ("Eating cats!" "Tiny penis!" "4.8 GPA"!, "Dying of tuberculosis in a gold mine!" vs. "Eating dry chicken!" "Slightly larger penis!" "Legacy admission!" "Dying for the First Amendment rights of COVID-19!")

I shuffle these cards in with a bunch of other cards I wrote for other shit, all of which are "inherently shocking" in some way

Maybe someone will accidentally get the Latino stereotype cards and play them here instead, maybe they'll get something completely different for I wrote for something else, maybe they'll get an "inherently funny" wildcard I made up like "Donald Trump's rectal prolapse"

It doesn't actually matter Everyone is drunk or high or whatever, the fact they're doing edgy offensive jokes makes them laugh no matter how little thought went into the writing or gameplay I make a million dollars just "for the gift of this game existing" and other bullshit

CAH's success is the same kind of seductive trap the South Park guys laid, where it's so offensive and edgy and boundary-violating that if you complain about it you sound like a wet blanket who's just mad because you're offended

Which sucks, because it IS offensive and it IS problematic but it's also a bad, shallow game It's a weaksauce way for unfunny people to pretend they're funny by quoting a joke that already exists It's the new, productized form of reciting Monty Python skits

And hopefully the cringe level of the attempt to make a PG-rated Cards Against Humanity -- taking away the cloak of "You're just a censorious prude" -- will reveal the whole thing just has no clothes

Anyway I'm mad because I'm very conscious that I could've made Cards Against Humanity, easily Not because I'm special, ANYONE could've invented this game and written the initial set of core cards Any mildly funny person with any awareness of this style of online humor

"Dirty Apples to Apples" was already completely a thing, you just had to take it "up to eleven", as they say But of course if I'd done that I couldn't have gotten massively rich and influential by doing so Most people couldn't

And it starts to get really clear to you that CAH's huge popularity and cultural influence wasn't because Max Temkin was a master of product design, or game design, or comedy writing The whole "phenomenon" was a very pure example of monetizing his cultural capital
