Honestly I wonder how many filter courses are really just bad pedagogy that’s been institutionalized. No one wants to teach the course well so they flip a high fail rate into a good thing.

I don't know about the humanities side, but the pedagogical aim of filter classes on the bio side is to prioritize a type of learner who will succeed in med school, someone who can memorize with some ease and/or has a strong methodology for acquiring info quickly.

Like, you can be ethical and filter someone, but your obligations to that student are stronger than to others. If you cut someone off from what they want to do, you make sure they’re ok. (Some humanities grad programs that actively place students in other fields spring to mind)
