So he didn't learn about the *concept* of "filter courses" until 2013, when he was in a PhD program himself, and he's blithely decided "not everyone can be a PhD" justifies their existence, despite the massive waste of time and money they represent for those who get filteredhttps://twitter.com/HealeyParera/status/1300594457297989632 …

Amazingly, Freddie deBoer was in a doctoral program before he realized some courses aim to weed out students. And his belated private discovery of a major public feature of nearly every educational system ever now makes him... a visionary? https://www.chronicle.com/article/some-students-are-smarter-than-others-and-thats-ok …

He's put, like, zero thought into the damage enrolling and then dropping out does to a student's life, especially a student who does not come from family wealth That a low graduation rate is a *failure of the admissions department*, it means THEY LIED TO THE STUDENT

Clearly FdB was never a biology student because all the 100 science classes are weeders, not usually for PhDs, for med school. It has such a distorting effect of teaching and coursework.

No only a waste of time and effort but really damage what people think they capable and reinforce inequities in a field.

Harvey Mudd College achieve gender parity in their CS program in ~6yrs by changing the intro course from a filter course while the gender balance in CS has gotten worse nationwide.

How is Freddie deBoer still a thing, I thought he'd been booted out of the stratosphere ages ago.

Grifters always return. Last I saw he was guesting on Jes e Signal's podcast. I flipflop between thinking he's actually clueless, or he's quite aware and just cynically doing a bit Either way, he needs to get gone for good

it strikes me that the pedagogical approach of almost every humanities course i ever took was to try and meet the student where they're at and go from there

It was wild to Ben in an elementary education program where the philosophy isn’t “if a kid fails, that means YOU failed to teach them” and then Ben friends without science majors where failing is the norm, and then they scale things so the exact number they want can pass.
