I guess it will be progress when you have a character like that and have their bitter child go "She was always a shitty mom and always will be, but I guess that's not the only important thing" The way we've heard hundreds of times for dads

I do have very mixed feelings about the famous story of Goro Miyazaki saying what he learned from being a film director himself is that his dad was "a below average father and husband but unquestionably the greatest animation director in the world" Fair enough, I guess

I mean it's not like there's also plenty of terrible fathers who also haven't succeeded at anything else so

But also like as a mother I can’t think of a more motivating factor than my kids to fight evil and save the world. EVERYTHING felt like the end of the world at 16 I feel like I would probably just listen to fallout boy and cry at that age rather than like, fight lol

Michelle Obama once said something really great about how even though her and Barack's jobs removed them from their children's lives more than was ideal, they were trying to make the world a place that was safer/better for their girls when they were gone...

I love the Broken Earth books for depicting motherhood as a complicated, half-broken thing. You understand completely why she's a terrible mother, but also sympathize with the daughter she royally screwed up.

Yeah, the only book genre I can think of where you're routinely supposed to sympathize with the messed-up mother as well as the daughter is women's literary fiction, like Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, or The Joy Luck Club.

I mean I would absolutely write a terrible mom game I think the closest to such a thing that exists is TLOU2, in both the terrible mom (Ellie) and good mom (Abby) sense, but Life is Strange 2 deserves an honorable mention even though the mom's not playable

Skyler White both endangers her children AND saves them from the shit that her husband puts them through. I've actually come around to finding her more interesting than... um.... Walt, that's it.
