I honestly still don't get why Fury Road is the Social Justice Approved Apocalypse Story I mean, it's a good movie! It also has a scene where the hero takes four women in bathing suits hostage, one of whom is pregnant and later dies and gets cut open

I think it's a good example of how much the meta-narrative AROUND films/games/shows/etc ends up steering the boat as far as it's cultural reputation.

But like come on people hate post apocalypses! Except this one! And you can't tell me it's because of Charlize, or they would have liked Atomic Blonde and Old Guard!

Yeah my mom who pretty categorically hates Post-Apocalyptic Stuff also was kind of meh on Fury Road, which I find a bit annoying, but it's at least consistent.

Whereas I remember film critics being like "teeeechnically this is a movie about rape victims escaping and taking revenge on their rapist, it's like, the whole plot, and normally that's a Bad Trope, but it's progressive here bc Reasons"

And that's compounded by the fact that-like I love George Miller-but he's not like a fresh unproblematic voice. He's literally the same white guy that made all the other Mad Max movies, the tropes of which Fury Road supposedly so masterfully avoids, so what's the deal there?

The thing is Fury Road absolutely follows a lot of the same themes and tropes of the old Mad Max movies, so idk where that particular narrative comes from

Yeah the idea that there's some kind of night and day difference between Fury Road and the previous movies is something that's come up both from lovers and haters of the movie and I just don't see it

And I worry that I've come off as a hater of the movie: I very much am not.
