Like it's a huge part of Max's original canon storyline that he's from the Old World and he lost his faith that the world could be saved after he saw his family die But given how far in the past the apocalypse seems to be in Fury Road it doesn't seem possible he's that old

Yeah, it seems like *maybe* the Many Mothers and Immortan Joe/Bullet Farmer/People Eater may be from earlier stages of the apocalypse (if not from the world before it?), but Max is clearly younger. I wondered if he was from an earlier movie and had donned the "Max" persona

Yeah one of the fan theories is this "Mad Max" is actually the Feral Kid from The Road Warrior, who's taken up Max Rockatansky's identity after the original vanished The community he apparently abandoned (with the little girl) was the one from the end of that movie

The fact that the Pursuit Special was explicitly stated in Mad Max 1 to be unique but then it keeps on getting totaled and reappearing again is the strongest argument against there being Mad Max continuity, yes
