I rewatched (part of) Fury Road with some friends online yesterday and something that was really jarring, not having seen the old Mad Max movies, and not just because of the current *gestures*, is Max opening by saying he was a cop before the apocalypse.

The whole thing is just broad strokes, like the little girl in Fury Road isn't actually a character we've seen before but she's the *equivalent* of the wife and kid in Mad Max 1 (or the feral boy in 2, or the community of kids in 3) You just need to know Max has a family he lost

He, himself, may not be entirely clear on what his own history is As the title of the movie says, he's not in the best psychological health

Yeah, it seems like *maybe* the Many Mothers and Immortan Joe/Bullet Farmer/People Eater may be from earlier stages of the apocalypse (if not from the world before it?), but Max is clearly younger. I wondered if he was from an earlier movie and had donned the "Max" persona

Well isn’t that the reason for the “half-life” thing and the whole terrible sexual dynamics? That people only live roughly a quarter as long, and maybe half by stealing people’s blood?
-
IIRC, the comics suggest that is specific to the war boys/the people Immortan Joe has enslaved, but there are other groups like the Many Mothers or even Immortan et al. who live longer

Not quite - the way the first movie portrays it is that finding his family run down by criminals doesn't make him loose faith, it breaks him. Not a nihilistic change of heart, but a psychotic break combined with a roaring rampage of revenge. He doesn't even ditch his badge.

Right, but he runs off into the wilderness afterwards because there's no place for him in the Old World anymore, he has no further reason to even try to save it
