Honestly when Americans say shit like "In times as dark as these why do we need more stories about failure and suffering" it sounds like an alcoholic who just killed someone driving drunk going "You want me to quit drinking NOW?"https://twitter.com/absurdistwords/status/1299709495095033856 …

One of my favorite things I’ve read somewhat recently is the manga 20th Century Boys. It’s all about how those fantasies look in reality, and to quote Kingsman, “it’s not that kind of movie, bruv” and that the conspiracy *won’t* just be stopped magically by the protagonist.

Idk, but I haven't watched Handmaids Tale or The Man In The High Castle because I'm afraid they look too much like reality

There’s a pretty massive gap in quantity between “stories set in either our world or close-to-home secondary worlds” and “the entire set of narratives people call Too Depressing For Our Trying Times”

Folks criticizing about a lack of optimism are just like...unfounded & irrational optimism can be even more dangerous than reflexive pessimism b/c it demands that you blind yourself to the consequences of what you push for. That seems to be the story here: refusal of consequences

I dont think this is what absurdistwords is saying. He is famously brutal about stating the naked truth. I think he means he refuses to tolerate narratives where ppl claim its not worth resisting cuz there is no way to win. Hes talking abt the value of resistance in itself.

I'm agreeing with him

Yes and the consequence is that when the bad guys win in real life (as they do often do) the cognitive dissonance forces many to decide they must be the good guys after all.
