My dad has a horrible habit of assuming everything would work out fine, to the point he couldn't even acknowledge it when a family member was experiencing severe depression. "She'll hit bottom and bounce back" he said, as though "bottom" didn't mean trauma or potentially death.

Part of why they keep assigning 1984 and To Kill a Mockingbird and (maybe not as often) The Chocolate War is that sometimes you just lose. Sometimes you even break new ground and do something no one expected and you’re still just fucked.

I think I’d have a much higher tolerance for these takes if people didn’t act like they weren’t describing the vast majority of available fiction and the metric narratives are judged by as a yardstick but as is I hate it here

Having survived being raised by Objectivists, we are *extremely* nervous about any rhetoric which attempts to dictate what stories fiction should tell, and how, based on abstract political reasoning. That's how you find up with fascist propaganda.
