The Elon Musk brain implant thing has me thinking again about how much I wish someone would do a better riff on what Joss Whedon's Dollhouse was about I have a lot of feelings about mental health, therapy/meds, and how that all works in a world of capitalism and bosses

That show was so trashy and so bad in a lot of ways but he touched on so much real stuff in the writing The trigger for the Dolls going back to be reprogrammed is "It's time for your treatment" (which they make a joke out of with Paul misremembering it as "You need therapy")

Really pushes a lot of buttons Like hopefully everyone realizes Musk's mood-improving brain implant is grifting vaporware but we are obviously heading down this road in the future

An idea I had a whole back for a story was a world where neural implants let people sleepwalk dependably through work, such that all their time spent truly awake was leisure time, and many legitimately had no idea what they did when "on the clock."
-
And how their bosses used this to horribly abuse their power.

This is a very popular take on this site but it isn’t actually true. Most therapy barely engages with even simple economic reality at all. Part of the reason I stopped going was because they could never answer a simple question like ‘how am I supposed to keep my job’

I’d love a therapist or treatment that showed me how to be a better worker so that I wasn’t always hanging on to employment by a thread. If I was a productive worker I could reliably say that I’ll have a job this time in three months!
