Yeah in the 30s it was still vaguely possible to say "I'm a Republican because I hate rich people" (which Capra clearly did and even said he did) I mean people do still say that even now but I think the people saying it now all know it's bullshithttps://twitter.com/the_moviebob/status/1299174986033369090 …

It's just that, by now, there's more than enough evidence that this is horseshit I dunno, maybe in the 30s it was different (just like I'm perfectly willing to accept the actual specific New York machine Democrats he was attacking in Mr Smith Goes to Washington were that bad)

The old Rodney Dangerfield vehicle "Back to School" is also this, but the snobs are academics. Dangerfield's character is *very* Trumpy, in retrospect.https://twitter.com/refrag/status/1271831661471305733 …

I find it was easier to deal with a Trump-type character that is funny and self-depreciating. And though Dangerfield's characters in both "Back to School" and "Caddyshack" are mob-friendly, vulgar millionaires, they're both self-made and do not hide their (multitudinous) faults.
