As in, the teenagers are flashing back to the past But the one who is trans is never deadnamed As I understand this means that the space of flashbacks is limited to only a couple of years JUST TO AVOID DEADNAMING

It wouldn't just be to avoid deadnaming, would it? It would be to avoid actually showing them pre-transition Which isn't an automatically bad thing to do, of course, but I think the argument "We're tired of seeing the before and after" is a stronger argument than the other

I mean, except in games that's not a trope. Even the negative trans stereotypes from the bad old days like the elf sex worker in Dragon Age didn't show her before transition I literally don't know that it's ever happened in games

There was that game Caroline, I think? IIRC there was something with a trans woman side character for whom the "good" ending has her not transitioning, which is much more objectively bad

Catherine. I'm not sure if that counts exactly, that effectively functions as s detransition? Which is a whole other can of worms. In any case, Atlus games go in their own box of shame and are not tropes

It's not "her good ending" It's the ironic new ending for Catherine's route, where Catherine falls so hard for Vincent she alters reality so she can be Vincent's real true love (and not an evil succubus trying to get his soul) by going back in time and incarnating as a human

Which apparently changes history profoundly and creates a new timeline It's ironic because in the whole game proper the idea is Katherine is Vincent's real girlfriend whom he cares about as a person but is getting bored with and Catherine is the exciting mystery girl fantasy

But new timeline Catherine is Vincent's friend from childhood and is an unassuming modest sweetheart and is more like Katherine than the original Katherine (except she still looks the same so I guess Vincent is more into her physically, bc blonde and boobs)

But anyway Part of the reason we know it's an alternate timeline when Vincent and Catherine get married at the end is that everyone's life is slightly different than it was in the original timeline Including Erica, who has not yet transitioned and still goes by Eric

This isn't dwelt upon though and it's certainly not implied her life is going better in the new timeline than the old one It's insensitive af but it's not the outright anti-trans message implied above

It may not even actually imply anything other than that Catherine and Vincent are getting married way earlier in the timeline than Vincent and Katherine would have in the original one (because they're childhood sweethearts rather than meeting in college)

(Erica is a side NPC whom Vincent cannot romance, because her name isn't some form of K/Catherine, and so her story isn't really elaborated on in any route)

Honestly it's funny that it's Erica's role in the Catherine ending that got brought up and, you know, not the whole concept of the new character Rin I guess Erica is actually trans and Rin is one of those stupid anime "No it's not the same thing" characters
