Just... a cycle of perpetual harm and toxcity perpetrated not just solely by bad actors, but the well-intentioned and the traumatized.

See I think that one leads into the other, particularly when hate/condemnation swarms offer people who don't otherwise feel like they have much power the promise of power over the creatives and properties they love.

Oh, *absolutely.* It’s almost liberating, to finally have that power to affect “change” on someone... and by change, I mean trauma and emotional and psychological harm.

And honestly the more someone has tried to be generally Kind the more vulnerable they are, especially as "being mostly not shitty or at least not seriously shitty" has been aggressively conflated with "being actively at your disposal/a 'safe space' for your fans"

Like from what I'm hearing this stuff is bluntly the sort of thing that damn near any friend group of creatives is going to do: A mild level of thoughtlessness, bc that sort of easy thoughtless lack of self-consciousness is part of how creators actually make stuff.

But bc they were identified as The Safe Positive Space, it's suddenly a vast transgression and betrayal of The Fans and their desire for safety and sanitization. Insert side observation this got waaay more backlash than SU and the blatant dirty joke nature of Steg here

To oneup you on jadedness about this; I'm honestly starting to think that online-centric activism that has taken up the spotlight among many younger people has no genuine avenue of fostering change for the better, but just ruination of an individual's ideas and dreams -

And the obvious butt cover note: Well, true, sometimes those ideas and dreams can be malicious and hurtful, so ruining those can conveniently be helpful to others; but the dynamics behind that are still amoral at the core, and don't care on what exactly it is about

Oh I was just observing that it seems a little sketch the explicitly femme coded work gets a more intense backlash than the one that as
@Nymphomachy observed is at best ambivalent on femme if not actively pro soft masc triumphing over femme2 replies 0 retweets 3 likes
I really don't think, given the complete history rather than focusing on just one incident, you can say the backlash to Steven Universe was "milder" AT ALL

There was a whole tag on Tumblr called "SU-critical", there were people making their whole careers as YouTubers on anti-SU discourse, they were saying things like how the Human Zoo episode was "objectively fascist", they were "exposing" R Sugar as a secret pedophile
