Ah, this is a classic trope that goes back to Die Hard ("Uh oh, no bullets Hans") And yes, it's obviously ridiculous if you've ever handled a real pistol

Later iterations of this bit in media have tried to mention this fact -- Taken's line "That's the problem with sitting behind a desk, you forget things! Like the weight in the hand of a gun that's loaded and one that's not!" but it's still pretty silly

If you wanted to actually fool somebody you'd have to put actual dummy bullets in the magazine or else do something like remove the firing pin

Depending on the pistol, removing the firing pin would be the most reliable option That way even if they rack the slide or pop out the mag everything will look good (Dummy rounds are typically just cartridge shaped and are much lighter than cartridges)

I'm a bad Texas girl. All I know about guns is "keep finger away from trigger unless you're shooting" "Don't point it at something unless you want to kill it" and that my dad nearly got arrested for pawning his silencer attachment so...don't do that.

Yeah, i mean, the two things you mostly NEED to know are "do not EVER have your finger inside the trigger guard unless you plan to shoot the thing" and "do not EVER point a firearm at anything you do not intend to hurt real bad". Oh, and "know whether the safety is on or off".

I mean, if you need to use it, yes, you should know how to deactivate the safety if the gun has one. (Revolvers don't with two exceptions you're exceedingly unlikely to encounter at random, for instance.)

But the four rules of gun safety are: 1. All guns are always loaded. 2. Keep your damn finger off the damn trigger. 3. Never point a gun at anything you are not willing to kill or destroy. 4. Always be aware of your target and what is behind it.

You could argue that 1) and 2) boil down to being the same rule in practice, as do 3) and 4) Like they're restatements of the same principle, like the first two rules of Fight Club

There's some controversy over the fact that the "first rule of gun safety" is "the gun is always loaded", like it's not actually literally true but it's phrased in a way to make sure newbies understand the appropriate amount of fear

I mean it is true that it's not possible to, say, disassemble a Glock without pulling the trigger so the striker is no longer in firing position If you literally believed there was a round in the chamber, then you simply could not disassemble it

But the point is to emphasize that even though you are intentionally pulling the trigger with the understanding the gun isn't loaded because you just unloaded it yourself and cleared the chamber, you still point the gun in a safe direction and pull the trigger braced to fire

As a pure muscle memory thing, so the situation of casually pulling the trigger while the gun is sitting in your lap just never becomes something you get used to doing
